Description

Gergana linden wood carving

Inspired by the poem “The Spring of the White-legged” by Petko Slaveykov, written in 1873.

It tells the story of the beautiful Bulgarian girl Gergana, whom the vizier meets at the village fountain and tries to persuade him to follow him to Istanbul. However, she proves to him that even if she went with him, she would not love him as she loves her homeland, her parents and her beloved Nikola. So the Turk leaves her, impressed by her determination, in the second part of the poem Gergana dies because her shadow is built into the fountain.
